Sebastian insisted on the hike once Reed admitted he didn’t have as much work as he’d been saying. It was the weekend after all. Reed chose a trail without too many offshoot paths or footing obstacles that would also give them a good two-hour hike. He led the way untilthe roofofhis home disappeared and the sounds of the road faded to be replaced by birds and a stream gurgling somewhere to their right. He took a bite of a protein bar and gulped down water before giving up his patience.

“You don’t need to follow,” Reed said, trying not to sound petulant. “The trail’s wide enough.” “I have a great view.”

Reed stopped and looked back over his shoulder. “Are yougoingto denyit?”Sebastianasked. “I’mgoing to ditch you along the way if you can’t

hold up your end ofthe conversation.” Their eyes met, and Reed wondered at the double meaning behind his statement. So far, Sebastian had been great for conversation. They got along well, even when they weren’t trying to get into each other’s pants. He hadn’t meant it to sound otherwise.

Sebastian said, “Finish your snack. I’ll come talk whenyour mouthisn’t distracted.”

Reed laughed, grateful Sebastian didn’t take his comment in the wrong way. He stuffed the rest of the snack inhis mouth. He could spend the entire dayout in the woods without getting bored or exhausted, but he needed to refuel to keep up his energy. He crumpled the wrapper and stuffed it in his pocket. He glanced over his shoulder with one eyebrow raised in an exaggerated, comicalexpression. “Well?”he said.

Bas stepped forward, pausing to tuck Reed’s water bottle in the small day pack he carried, before they both struck out together down the path. “What do youwant to talk about?”Sebastianasked.

The path leveled out for a while, affording them a lazystrollbefore it dipped and veered toward the sound of the water. “Doesn’t matter,” Reed said. “I don’t usuallyhave companyonmyhikes.”

“I canbe quiet and enjoythe scenery.”

Reed glanced at Sebastian, but the man was watchingtwo graysquirrels chasingeachother around a tree trunk. They cavorted for a couple of minutes, gripping the tree trunks and branches with tiny claws as they raced around, and then, suddenly, they climbed upward into the canopyout ofsight.

“If we’re lucky, we could see a deer or two,” Reed whispered.

Sebastian jumped and turned a smile at Reed. “I do like nature,” he said, his voice low so as not to disturb. “I reallydo.”

“Big, bad, motorcycle-driving rock-and-roll singer likes the great outdoors?”

Sebastian frowned, but Reed smiled and said, “I’m teasing. I can tell. There’s this cute sense of wonder in your eyes.” When Sebastian’s frown deepened, Reed added, “Okay, maybe cute isn’t the right word, but I stillunderstand.”

With a goofy smile that smoothed into his usual cocky grin, Sebastian clapped Reed on the back and pulled himclose for a kiss. “It’s allgood, Parker.”

“Reed.”WhenSebastiansaid nothing, Reed didn’t back down. He met the man’s gaze and said, “Please callme bymyname.”

“Parker’s your name.”

“This isn’t a football team.” Reed rolled his eyes and started walking again. He didn’t picture Sebastian playing team sports, but then he hadn’t pictured him as a nature lover.
